Geographic Information System (GIS)

The Stillwater County GIS Department is responsible for the development and management of the County's spatial database while providing analysis and mapping services to the County departments, the public, local businesses, and governments. GIS is used throughout the County government to support a variety of functions including economic development, elections, emergency services, environmental health, land use, planning, roads and bridges, and schools.

Rural Addressing

The Stillwater County GIS Department is responsible for assigning and issuing rural addresses. Rural Addressing aims to provide all occupied rural properties with nationally recognized addresses that will assist Emergency Services and other service providers in locating a property. A rural address will consist of a distance-based road number, road name, locality, and postcode.

Property owners seeking assignment of a rural address can complete the Online Rural Address Application, or print the PDF from the Quick Links below and return it to the GIS office.

What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making. (ESRI)
